STRENGTH TRAINING FOR DIABETICS
While there is research to demonstrate that aerobic endurance training increases insulin action, thereby helping those with Type II diabetes, most patients with the disease are overweight and unlikely to take up endurance training. More recent research, however, shows that strength training improves the effects of insulin in the muscles of patients with Type II diabetes as well. When researchers investigated the impact of strength training three times weekly, for six weeks, on insulin action in Type II diabetes, they found that strength training both increased muscle mass and seemed to enhance the effects of insulin. Thus, strength training is an effective alternative to endurance training for the Type II diabetic.
